Research Interests:

Minerals are the essential components of our earth. But they are also a great treasure and a comprehensive library for the development of new materials for modern technologies such as energy conversion and storage. The behaviour of a material under different thermodynamic conditions (pressure, temperature, electrochemical potential, …) as well as the transport behaviours of ions is closely linked to the internal crystal structure.

A core point of my research is aimed at the fundamental investigation of the crystal structure and transport properties of minerals/materials as a function of temperature and chemical composition. Particular attention is also paid to structural phase transitions and the behaviours of a structure in the critical area.

The main analytics for such investigations are diffraction methods (lab-based and large-scale facility X-rays, neutrons) on polycrystalline samples and single crystals. The findings are complemented by spectroscopic methods such as 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, Raman and IR spectroscopy. This makes it possible to characterize local and long-range properties of a material.

We are operatively running the X-ray diffraction lab of the Department and operate one of the last remaining 57Fe Mössbauer labs in the German Speaking area.
