Silicon and its alloys are of interest in energy storage (lithium ion batteries) and energy conversion systems (thermoelectric materials). Highly porous silica is a promising source for the preparation of silicon and silicon alloys,  such as LiSi or MgSi alloys. Our aim is to develop novel and reproducible synthesis protocols towards these materials with special emphasis on the optimization of the structural properties of “nano” silicon and its alloys.
