What will I learn?
The Master’s program in philosophy brings students up to the latest developments in various domains of philosophy, such as epistemology, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, ethics, normative ethics, metaethics, political philosophy, logic, philosophy of logic, and philosophy of science (with special emphasis on the philosophies of physics, climate change, and economics). The program offers the opportunity of carrying out all coursework in English. German speaking students can do up to 50% of the required course work in German. The Master thesis may be written in English or German.
What makes Salzburg so special as a place to study?
The Philosophy Department in Salzburg is one of the few fully analytic departments in continental Europe. Our teachers are leading players in their respective fields, as witnessed by the large amount of competitive research funding they have been awarded in recent years. Among other things, these research projects fund international conferences as well as international postdoctoral researchers who, on top of their research activities, offer a number of advanced graduate classes in English. MA students will have a chance to learn in small seminar groups, work under the supervision of leading international researchers, give presentations, participate in research seminars, and, more generally, in the (rather active) research life of the department. Finally, Salzburg itself is a beautiful, and safe, town, at the heart of Europe, very close to the Alps and the Salzkammergut lakes, boosting a thriving and varied cultural life.
Which career opportunities do I have?
The skills taught in a master’s level philosophy program can be applied in many fields: science and cultural management, information technology, environmental protection, adult education, publishing, media, libraries and archives. The international orientation of the program makes it possible for graduates to apply for entry into a PhD program in philosophy anywhere in the world.
