Please keep in mind the current visa regulations when planning your stay.

Citizens of European Union / European Economic Area countries and Switzerland

If you are a citizen of a European Union / European Economic Area country or a Swiss citizen, you do not need a visa or residence permit for your stay in Austria. You will only need a travel document (passport, identity card). You will need sufficient financial means to cover the costs of your stay and a valid health insurance will be required. However, if your stay is longer than three months, you must apply for a registration certificate within four months of entry.

Citizens of third countries

If you are not a citizen of a European Union / European Economic Area country or of Switzerland you are a so-called “national of a third country.” Depending on the length and purpose of your stay you will need a visa (for stays up to 6 months) or a residence permit (for stays of more than 6 months). Citizens from selected countries may enter Austria  without a visa (maximum stay of 3 months /90 days; no employment allowed).
Processing your visa or residence permit application may require some time, also depending on which embassy/office is in charge of it. Therefore, you should apply for your visa or residence permit als soon as possible. The visa application procedure for family members may be different from the application fprocedure for the guest scientist itself. If you want to work during your stay in Austria, up to 6 months, you will need a Visa C or D with the extension “Erwerb” (i.e. for gainful employment) even if you otherwise can enter Austria without a visa.

A Visa D is also valid in the Schengen states (max. 90 days). Like a Visa C it is not valid in the United Kingdom (no Schengen country).
