Financial Support
(Except for mobilities to the United Kingdom. Information on this can be found here).
Students who pursue a study period within the framework of Erasmus+ receive an Erasmus+ grant in addition to the waiver of tuition fees abroad. This is a partial grant to cover the additional costs due to the stay abroad. The Erasmus+ grant is paid exclusively by the International Relations Department.
On this page you will find information about financial support during your Erasmus+ stay:

Erasmus+ Grant
Students receive following Erasmus funding:
- individual support for the period of studies physically spent at the hosting institution (monthly rate based on calulation per day).
Program countries are divided into three country groups as defined in the European Commission’s Program Guide. - travel support > The amount of travel support depends on the distance travelled, which is calculated using the Distance Calculator (start: address of the home university, end: address of the partner university) and the means of transport (see overweiw rasmus+ grants Call 2024). As a general rule, participants travelling less than 500 km should use low-emission means of transport.
NOTE:
Student mobility for study purpose is fundable under following conditions:
- for the duration of studies spent at the hosting institution > check the lecture period not the semester dates!
- currently for 5 months (i.e. 150 days) maximum within the frame of lecture periods
- additional mobility days (if proven) will only be covered by Erasmus+ with zero-grant (no additional funding) > for details on zero-grant see below
- funding for only one semester per student per academic year (no extensions possible)
The specific duration of the financial support (if applicable in combination with Zero Grant) is determined by the Paris Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS) for each academic year – based on the Erasmus+ budget available to PLUS.
The Erasmus+ grant is paid in two installments: 70% at the beginning of the stay and 30% after the stay. The payment will be made on a per day basis.
Please note that the payment of the 2nd instalment of the Erasmus+ grant will only be made after submission and check of the final documents AFTER mobility.
In principle, 30 ECTS must be earned per semester, but at least 3 ECTS per month of stay, which are recognised at the home university. The repayment limit for the grant depends on the length of stay; if you do not provide at least 3 ETCS per month of stay, the grant must be repaid. Here, the ECTS recognized at the University of Salzburg count!
Explanation Zero Grant:
- Erasmus stay without financial grant while maintaining Erasmus status (e.g. tuition waiver).
- The difference between the actual duration of the stay (mobility period) and the financially supported duration of the stay (Erasmus grant period) is called the zero grant period
- Zero Grant Period:
> counts towards the general Erasmus mobility phase.
> counts towards the total available Erasmus funding period of 12 (or 24) months per study phase
> must be covered by ECTS (3 ECTS/month)
- Example: E+ stay abroad planned for 6 months (= mobility phase), of which 5 months are funded by PLUS according to E+ guidelines (= Erasmus funding period) and 1 month is zero grant (= zero grant period).> entire mobility phase recorded as Erasmus stay> Evidence must be provided for entire mobility phase (= 6 months): confirmation of stay; ECTS certificates (at least 3 ECTS/month recognized at PLUS)
Financial Top Up
In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, further financial support (Top Up) can be applied for:
- a) for students with child(ren) who take the child(ren) with them on the Erasmus+ stay.
- b) Students with a disability
- c) Students with a chronic illness (physical or mental), if this results in increased financial expenditure during the stay abroad (compared to the stay in the home country).
If this applies to you, you can apply for the top-up ‘Fewer Opportunities’ in the amount of EUR 250 additional Erasmus+ funding per month (calculated on a daily aliquot basis). ATTENTION: The application for Top Up must be done in the frame of the application for the E+ scholarship. It is not possible to apply for the top up later!
The following documents can be used as proof for the top up:
a) birth certificate, proof of custody if applicable, proof of residence of the child/children in the host country
b) in case of disability: disability pass or other proof
c) in the case of chronic illness: medical certificate and proof of the additional costs incurred compared to the stay in the sending country, e.g. declaration of honour by the student or other documents proving the additional costs.
Inclusion support
In addition, inclusion support can be applied for to cover the additional financial costs actually incurred in connection with a specific personal situation during the Erasmus+ stay (especially for participants with physical, mental or health impairments)
Which costs can be applied for inclusion support? Some examples (selection):- Travel costs for necessary medical check-ups in the home country, etc.- Travel and accommodation costs for personal assistance or accompanying person- Costs for sign language interpreters and co-tutors- Shipping costs, transport costs, etc.
Important: When preparing your Erasmus+ stay, we ask you to inform us of your situation and to estimate the additional costs that are likely to be incurred during your Erasmus+ mobility or in the host country. Please contact the International Office as early as possible. An application for inclusion support with a detailed cost breakdown must be sent to the National Agency at least eight weeks before the start of the mobility.
Recipients of study grants (Studienbeihilfe)
Recipients of study grants (Studienbeihilfe) can also apply to the Scholarship Office (Stipendienstelle) for a study abroad grant (“Auslandsbeihilfe“). Simultaneous receiving of study abroad grant and Erasmus+ grant for the same stay is allowed as of the academic year 2019/20. Here you can find information on the amount of the study abroad grant as well as the travel grant.
Please note that as a recipient of a study abroad grant, you must submit a transcript of records to the Scholarship Office after completing your stay abroad (again, the minimum requirement of 3 ECTS per month of stay applies), otherwise you will have to repay the entire study abroad grant. The study grant (“Inlandsbeihilfe”) itself is not affected by this.
Tuition fees
During your Erasmus+ stay you are exempt from tuition fees at the University of Salzburg and at the host university.
Attention: During your stay abroad you have to pay the ÖH-fee in accordance with the deadline (!) – otherwise you will be exmatriculated! Some host universities charge Erasmus+ Incomings amounts similar to the ÖH fee – you cannot be exempted from these fees.
A leave of absence at the University of Salzburg is not possible during a semester abroad. Students who study at several universities at the same time must in any case report the planned stay abroad to every other university if they want to maintain their admission.
The exemption from tuition fees is only valid for the period of the stay abroad. A stay abroad completed within this period does not lead to a later exemption from tuition fees.An Erasmus+ stay abroad does not extend the number of tolerance semesters! After completion of the minimum period of study + 2 tolerance semesters, the tuition fee must be paid. For recipients of the Austrian “Studienbeihilfe”, an extension of the tolerance semesters can be applied for under certain conditions and if announced in time. The contact person for this is the scholarship office ( Stipendienstelle).
The receipt of family allowance, on the other hand, could possibly be extended by one semester due to an Erasmus+ stay. Please contact the tax office directly!
