Ernst Mach-Scholarship – UKRAINE
As a reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the forced flight from the country, there is a need for immediate support for displaced persons as well as for students, graduates and scientists who are already in Austria and who have lost their financial support due to the war.The special scholarship program Ernst Mach – Ukraine helps Ukrainian students to continue their studies in Austria. The scholarship is open to Ukrainian students who are already enrolled in a regular study program at an Austrian higher education institution as well as students, scientists and researchers from Ukraine who wish to continue their studies or projects here.
Target group: students, graduates, postgraduates, postgraduates enrolled in an ongoing doctoral or PhD programme, postdocs, scientists and researchers
Countries of origin: Ukraine (citizenship)
Duration: 1 to 9 months (extension possible up to 21 months)
Scholarship sum: 715 euros per month
Funding organisation: OeAD-GmbH on behalf and financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research
Closing date for applications: applications are possible at any time till 29.02.2024

Call for proposals for a crisis support for young scientists from Ukraine of the Christian Doppler Research Association
This call for proposals is intended to support young scientists from Ukraine who had to flee due to the war or who were already in Austria before the war (e.g. with a scholarship) and cannot return and have no other fundings. Funding is available for persons who are conducting research in the thematic area of an active CD Laboratory or JR Centre under the supervision of the respective director for a maximum period of one year.

Appeal of the Salzburg University Conference to support the leading victims of the war in Ukraine (University of Salzburg, PMU, FH-Salzburg, Mozarteum, Universität Seeburg)
The war in Ukraine has deprived countless people of their security and livelihood, forcing many to flee their homes. Members of Salzburg’s universities and their families and friends are also directly affected.The Salzburg University Conference, a cooperative initiative of the six universities in Salzburg, declares its solidarity with the main victims of the war in Ukraine. University members who would like to help will find below an excerpt of possibilities to support the coordinated relief effort:

The province of Salzburg has set up a website where private or commercially organised accommodation for refugees from Ukraine can be made available:
Caritas Salzburg is looking for accommodation and asks people who can provide suitable accommodation to send an e-mail to:
The federal government collects offers of accommodation centrally at and passes them on to the providers in the provinces.

Information on the reception of Ukrainian refugees
Unlike other refugees, refugees from Ukraine do NOT (and should not) have to apply for asylum and can therefore be housed from private parties. They are free to choose in which province they want to live and they have free access to the labour market. Until the persons concerned have found a job, Ukrainian refugees will also receive appropriate basic support (health insurance, support with living costs). Concrete information regarding the stay of Ukrainian refugees in Austria will follow shortly according to the official ordinance.
What does someone who wants to provide accommodation need to know?
- They must register (if they have not already registered with an arrival centre) with the BBU ( Federal Agency for Reception and Support Services).
- There is a BBU hotline with Ukrainian speaking counsellors available daily from 6am to 2pm (phone number: 01 2676 870 9460). For basic provisions, as it has been handled so far, foresees e.g. 240,00 € per month for food plus 120,00 € for rent.
- The prerequisite is that there is a tenancy agreement for at least this amount. Whether this regulation also applies to Ukrainian persons affected will only be determined after the ordinance has been issued.
