Overview

Landscapes are inherently complex and continuously changing. To discover the transdisciplinary drivers of change in a holistic-integrated view is part of the addressed challenge. In SMART Hydro, a web services orchestration framework combines existing geospatial methods and techniques to deliver additional value with the ‘Automated Geosynthesis’ approach. Environmental information captured by a wireless sensor network are made available and post-processed towards indicator development for immediate decision-making. Of particular interest are heavy rainfall and snow melting events, which are expected to increase in future climate changes. Both events have an impact on nutrient emissions from agricultural land to the surface waterbodies, which are studied in the Mondsee catchment to the east of Salzburg.

While landscapes are changing, humans are using them for leisure activities or sports. One particular interest of the landscape lab is SMART Biking. On the one side, we analyse the impacts of mountainbiking on landscapes, on the other side we use geospatial techniques to analyse the performance of cross country riders on uphill or downhill tracks with real-time spatio-temporal measurements taken from wearables and bike sensors.
