Biology is considered to be the leading science of the 21st century, significantly influencing numerous areas of society. Biologists contribute to the sustainable management of a wide range of global challenges. Examples include areas such as the biodiversity crisis, climate change, demographic change, and political discourse and legislation in the environmental field. New societal objectives, e.g. in relation to climate, environment and resource use, require a solid understanding of biological relationships locally, regionally, nationally, internationally and globally. Biologists can make significant contributions here now and will continue to do so in the future. The bachelor’s degree in biology at PLUS provides students with a fundamental understanding of the organization and processes of life, from the level of molecules to the level of populations, ecosystems, and the principles of evolution. The program provides a well-rounded education in the core subjects of general biology with emphasis, for example, on ecology, evolution, and biodiversity research, as well as in mathematics/statistics, chemistry, and physics, and the interdisciplinary linkages of biology with other disciplines and relevance in a societal context. In the final year of study, students can choose to specialize in the focus areas of Ecology and Evolution or Molecular Biology and Cell Biology, among others, as a sound preparation for the more advanced master’s programs Ecology & Evolution, Medical Biology or Molecular Biology. However, the topics of cell and molecular biology are taught in a more focused manner in the BSc programs Molecular Biosciences and Medical Biology.

Biology is considered to be the leading science of the 21st century, significantly influencing numerous areas of society. In this context, medical biology explores the biological foundations that are essential for human health and disease. It combines all the content of the diverse biological science disciplines and therefore provides a multi-faceted, biological understanding of topics essential to medicine. Course content ranges from the small-scale structure of the cell to organs and organ systems to the biology of complex interpersonal interactions. In addition to a sound scientific and experimental-analytical education in biomedically relevant subjects of biology, students also gain fundamental expertise in the disciplines of mathematics, chemistry and physics, which are important for the practical implementation of current research topics. In addition, graduates acquire important skills in dealing with model systems in preclinical research. The bachelor’s program in Medical Biology is a sound preparation for the advanced master’s programs in Medical Biology or Molecular Biology.
Molecular Bioscience

Molecular biosciences as a branch of biology have gained enormous importance in recent years, mainly because they deal with the molecular basis of biological processes. This provides a detailed understanding of the mechanisms of such important processes as growth and development, evolution, aging, diseases, e.g. allergy, cancer, and metabolic disorders, which also play a significant role in knowledge-based action in the provision of infrastructure and food to our society, in health care, and in important ecological problems. The bachelor program Molecular Biosciences at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the PLUS and the Faculty of Technical Sciences of the Johannes Kepler University Linz serves the nationally and internationally competitive, scientific and application-oriented professional training of molecularly oriented biologists in all areas of biology in which molecular mechanisms play an important role. It provides an understanding of the molecules, biochemical and biophysical processes, and higher-level cellular structures that are responsible for the functioning (or non-functioning) of organisms and/or biological systems.
