What will I learn?
The MA course in Ancient History and Classical Studies comprises Greek history including Aegean pre- and early history (Mycenology), Roman history, and the history of the countries, peoples and cultures of Middle and Western Europe, the Middle East and Egypt in the framework of the entire history of antiquity, as well as antiquity studies of the thereby circumscribed peoples and cultures. The focus lies on both political and cultural, social, military and everyday history, including the history of mentalities. Among the department’s core competences are memory, analysis and the methodologically reflected interpretation of different types of sources, whose spectrum ranges from literary and non-literary written texts to visual art and artefacts of everyday culture.
What makes Salzburg so special as a place to study?
Due to its beautiful landscape, numerous historic sights and the Salzburg Festival, Salzburg ranks among the most beautiful and interesting cities in the world. Moreover, Salzburg is a university town with tradition. Prince-archbishop Paris Lodron, the university’s patron saint, founded the university in 1622. Today, it is comprised of four faculties with 18.000 students and 2.800 employees. It is a centre of innovative research and firmly integrated into the cultural and economic life of Salzburg. With its national as well as international networking, it is a modern knowledge hub in the heart of Europe. We can be proud of this university, which fits perfectly into a town that boasts architectonically delightful buildings. To students, the University of Salzburg offers a broad range of courses with an excellent student-to-staff ratio.
