Focus
Communicative competence in multiple languages is one of the key qualifications for students and university graduates, enabling them to take advantage of the increasing internationalization in studies, research, and the professional world. To meet these educational requirements and facilitate participation in a multilingual and multicultural society, the Language Center at the University of Salzburg offers courses—hereinafter referred to as “language courses”—for acquiring communicative competences in various languages for students of all disciplines.
The foundation for successful participation in multilingual discourses is laid by acquiring communicative language competences in several areas (reception, production, interaction, and mediation).
Target Group
The supplementary study programme “Languages” can be taken by students of all disciplines who wish to acquire additional language skills or bundle their elective courses into a language focus. Courses that are part of the mandatory or elective curriculum of a degree program, or that serve as a prerequisite for admission to a degree program, as well as courses in students’ first languages or chosen fields of study, cannot be counted towards the supplementary study programme “Languages.”
Structure & Requirements
The supplementary study programme “Languages” are divided into two modules: the Basic Module and the Advanced Module, each requiring a minimum of 12 ECTS. For each module, students must demonstrate the acquisition of communicative language competences in two foreign languages, as provided by language courses. To earn the supplementary study programme “Languages,” students must successfully complete advanced language courses totaling at least 24 ECTS.
Basic Module (mind. 12 ECTS)
For the Basic Module, students must complete two advanced language courses in two foreign languages totaling at least 12 ECTS.
Advanced Module (mind. 12 ECTS)
For the Advanced Module, students must complete two advanced language courses in two foreign languages that require at least A1+/A2 level proficiency (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), totaling at least 12 ECTS.
* Proof of prior knowledge must be provided.
Course Registration
The courses offered by the Language Center are fee-based. All information about course registration can be found on the Language Center’s website.
