Focus

Movement, play, and sports are essential for the physical, motor, emotional, psychosocial, and cognitive development of children. Children have a so-called “natural urge to move,” which is attributed to the predominance of central nervous excitation processes. However, this urge to move is significantly restricted today by technological developments, media consumption, and urbanization, and is influenced by family role models and peer groups (Graf C. et al., Deutsche Zeitschrift für Sportmedizin, 2006). Lack of movement often leads to psychosomatic complaints, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. The supplementary study “Active Learning” aims to set an important focus in teacher education. The topic “Movement – Learning Promotion – Health” should be centrally integrated into everyday school life by future teachers, who serve as multipliers.

Goals

Students of the supplementary study “Active Learning” …

  • … acquire the competence to integrate the topic of “movement” qualitatively, effectively, health-promoting, and socially into everyday school life.
  • … are trained to lead active lessons, active breaks, and movement activities in after-school care.
  • … understand the learning-promoting effects of movement and can integrate appropriate learning-promoting exercises into subject-specific teaching.
  • … learn about movement activities to promote language acquisition.
  • … learn about creative and artistic movement activities.
  • … understand the theoretical background of nutrition and lifestyle.
  • … learn how to offer movement activities that promote health for students.
  • … understand the importance of movement as a preventive measure against violence.
  • … understand the social impact of movement in the context of inclusion.
  • … acquire the competence to assist in school events related to movement and health.
  • … acquire the competence to participate as a supervising teacher in summer and winter school sports weeks (optional: supervising ski instructor, swim assistant certificate, first aid training).

Target Group

The supplementary study “Active Learning” is primarily designed for teaching students but can generally be attended by all students.
