Focus

Even the most economically and politically successful societies in the West fail to sustainably eliminate poverty and eradicate social exclusion. Poverty and social exclusion thus remain an inherent part of our societies. These issues represent key societal questions because they particularly raise questions about the good life and a just human society. The academic study of poverty and social exclusion is therefore also paradigmatic for socially engaged and responsible science. It demands a high level of critical research, including reflections on knowledge production, the power of discourses, and the value of education, and is thus part of a university’s self-reflection.

The Center for Ethics and Poverty Research consolidates relevant courses at the University of Salzburg for the interdisciplinary supplementary studies “Poverty and Social Exclusion.” It cooperates with other university institutions, such as the “Focus Area Law, Economy, and Working World.”

Target Group

This supplementary study offers students from all disciplines the opportunity to cultivate relevant skills and attitudes in line with a humanitarian ideal of education. It is especially aimed at students who wish to address poverty-related topics in their qualification papers (Bachelor’s, Master’s theses, and dissertations).
