Casa do Povo is a cultural center that revisits notions of culture, community, and memory. Founded in 1953 by the progressive Jewish community, the institution was built from a double desire: to honor the Jews who died in concentration camps while creating a space where associations in Brazil could unite in the global fight against fascism. The founders envisioned Casa do Povo as a living monument: to remember is to act in the present. In the past decade, the legacy of Casa do Povo has been updated to align with contemporary demands and the transformations of its surroundings. Its flexible and porous program is based on hosting practices that prioritizes processes over results: from a boxing academy to public psychoanalysis sessions, independent publishing making, rehearsals, food activism are some examples of kinds of collectivities that turns memory into everyday action. In this presentation, we propose to share some of the Casa do Povo‘ modes of doing, highlighting projects that operate within a logic of porosity where the present construction of the institution is a co-creation with the communities that use the space.
