What will I learn?
In the MA degree course in German Language Sciences, students learn to overview the subject areas of German linguistics systematically, and to reflect them according to scientific standards. Furthermore, they will learn to develop these subject areas autonomously and to apply them professionally. Graduates will have a profound knowledge of the structures and changes of the German language, and its varieties against the background of its socio-cultural conditions and developments from its beginnings around 750 to the present day. Moreover, they will become familiar with models of German language acquisition. A special focus lies on the acquisition and use of the German language in a multilingual environment. Graduates will be able to conduct their own empirical analyses under consideration of theory and methodology to examine linguistic structures, variations and/or interaction in the German language.

What makes Salzburg so special as a place to study?
The interdisciplinary MA degree course is coined by a close networking of the individual linguistic departments at the University of Salzburg. The Department of German Studies offers the possibility for students to specialize in the field of DaF/DaZ (German as a Foreign Language/German as a Second Language), which, in combination with your profound linguistic education, allows you to gain the required competences to teach language in various situations.

Which career opportunities do I have?
Written and spoken language is both subject matter and instrument in many occupations. Outstanding language competences and the ability to use language in a reflected and creative way is a precondition for many careers: the media sector and publishing, journalism, and the advertising industry. In combination with an additional education, graduates are also qualified to teach at home and foreign universities, to mediate language and culture, and to conduct research on the German language.
