Dženeta Karabegović joined the Sociology Department in October 2018.
Her academic interests are in sociology and political science with a focus on migration, transnationalism, social movements, diaspora, education, remembrance, transitional justice, foreign policy, and the Balkans.
She holds a PhD in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick in the UK where she worked on an ERC funded project, ‘Diasporas and Contested Sovereignty,’ and has recently completed her Habilitation titled, “Navigating the Era of Polycrisis: Migration, Diaspora, and Agency.”
Prior to joining the PLUS, she was Assistant Professor at International Burch University and Lecturer at the Sarajevo School for Science and Technology. She has been a visiting scholar at the Institute for International Relations in Prague, Czech Republic, Mid-Sweden University’s Forum for Gender Studies, and the Harriman Institute at Columbia University.
She was a U.S. Fulbright Fellow at the Hugo Valentin Centre at Uppsala University in Sweden, holds an M.A. in International Relations from the University of Chicago and completed her B.A. (Hons) at the University of Vermont in Political Science and German with a Holocaust Studies minor.
Besides article and chapter length publications in peer-reviewed outlets, she has co-edited several books including the first book on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s foreign policy, a volume on diasporas and transitional justice, migration studies in Austria, and Bosnian Studies – Perspectives from an Emerging Field.
She is part of the Yugoslawomen+ Collective.
In addition to her academic work, she has consulted for multiple international organizations (e.g., IOM, UN Women, World Bank, OSCE Mission Kosovo, etc.), primarily with a focus on education, policy, migration, and the Western Balkans. More recently, she has taught several lectures (online) focused on Southeastern Europe at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the U.S. Department of State, combining practical and academic knowledge for U.S. diplomats about to be deployed to the region.
Beyond guest lectures and training sessions with students and seasoned professionals, including public servants, politicians, and civil society actors, she has designed and conducted over 20 different university-level courses in English, German, and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, and organized, facilitated, and moderated dozens of workshops, conferences, and panels.
At the PLUS, she teaches a MA-level course on the European External Action Service which includes organizing three simulations of the Foreign Service Council with Markus Gastinger and Gudrun Zagel at the SCEUS, and both undergraduate and graduate courses in the Sociology and Human Geography Department (in German and English).
She is available to supervise Bachelor, Master, and PhD level students in sociology and political science.
Beyond the University, she serves on the Board of Directors of Transparency International BiH, ŠTO TE NEMA, and Humanity in Action BiH.
She was born in Banja Luka, BiH and grew up in Berlin, Germany and Burlington, Vermont in the United States.
