Herbert Dachs born 1943 was until 2008 Chair of Austrian Politics at the Department of Political Science at the University of Salzburg. He received his degrees from the University of Salzburg (Dr.phil 1970, Venia docendi 1981, Univ. Prof. since 1987) and has been working on Austrian Federalism, political processes in the regions, the Austrian party system, new social movements, and themes of contemporary political education in Austria. He is the author of five monographs (including Schule und Politik. Die politische Erziehung an Österreichs Schulen 1918-1938(1982)), as well as of nearly 120 other publications. Moreover, Professor Dachs has edited or co-edited more than 25 volumes, yearbooks, and textbooks. Importantly, he is also co-editor of Politik in Österreich Das Handbuch, a standard work and classic text in the field of Austrian politics. Professor Dachs has served as the co-editor of the Salzburger Jahrbuch für Politik since 1989 and has also worked in a freelance capacity for science programs of Austrian Radio (Ö1).Crucially, he is the founder and coordinator of the postgraduate civics and political education program at Schloss Hofen, Vorarlberg. Professor Dachs has received several important professional and public awards such as in 2010 the René-Marcic-Prize of the State of Salzburg for special achievements in the area of publication.
