As part of the ‘Excellence in Digital Sciences and Interdisciplinary Technologies’ (EXDIGIT) initiative, funded by the State of Salzburg, the University of Salzburg is seeking to appoint a

 

doctoral candidate (f/m/d; 30 hours/week; until 31 August 2028)

 

as a scientifc project employee. The successful candidate will execute research in close collaboration with Dr. Franz-Benjamin Mocnik, EXDIGIT Professor of Space and Place in the Information Sciences. By doing so, the candidate is expected to closely collaborate within the wider framework of the EXDIGIT Research College and the existing research groups within the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences of the University of Salzburg and the Salzburg Research Institute.

Candidates are expected to fit well to a genuinely interdisciplinary research setting and share strong interest in the topic of representations of place and geographical information in general. Ideally, they will focus on one or more of the following areas:

  • geographical concepts (such as space and place),
  • semantics of place representations and other representations,
  • laws about geographical information,
  • formal reasoning with geographical information,
  • structural perspectives on geographical information, and
  • a theoretical understanding of these topics beyond

 

Further topics are, of course, welcome as long as they match the general vision outlined. In particular, candidates from the following fields are encouraged to apply: geographical information science/geoinformatics, human geography and the wider social sciences, mathematics, cognitive science, cartography and visualization, information science, philosophy, computer science, human–computer interaction, network science and physics, spatial planning, urban analytics, and the humanities.

The successful candidate is given the opportunity to carry out independent research and time to establish her/his own academic profile. She/he is expected to publish research results at scientific conferences and in journals, help organizing scientific events, and support the acquisition of third-party funding.

According to the Collective Agreement for University Employees, the successful candidate will be allocated to Employment Group B1 (EUR 2786.10 gross for 30 hours/week; monthly salary, paid 14 times a year).
