PhD Position at the University of Salzburg/Austria:  Exploring Immune Responses at the Molecular Level

Persistent infections with pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori drive chronic, low-grade inflammation, which sets the stage for the development of serious pathologies not only in the stomach but also in distant organs. The Horejs-Hoeck lab aims to unravel how H. pylori manipulates host immunity.

YOUR PROFILE:

  • Completed master’s degree in life sciences, medical biology, molecular biology, immunology, or comparable areas
  • Very good English skills (spoken and written)
  • Enthusiasm for basic research and a high level of interest in the areas of immunity and host-pathogen interactions
  • Ability to perform tasks independently while working collaboratively as part of a team
  • Basic knowledge in immunology and/or microbiology
  • Practical experience in molecular biology methods (qPCR, flow cytometry, ELISA, Western Blot), cell culture (isolation of cells from tissue or peripheral blood)
  • Practical experience in animal experiments or bioinformatics is desirable but not required

YOUR TASKS:

  • Planning and conducting experiments in the field of host-pathogen interactions
  • Investigating innate immune responses to pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori
  • Establishment of gastric organoid/immune cells co-cultures
  • Isolation of bacterial extracellular vesicles, cell culture of primary human cells, flow cytometry, fluorescent microscopy, spatial transcriptomics
  • Co-Supervision of Bachelor and Master Students
  • Presenting collected data in national and international congresses

 

This PhD position is fully funded by the Austrian Science Fund, FWF, for three years and should be filled by January 2025.
