THE McDONALDIZATION OF LEISURE

The basic ideas associated with the McDonaldization thesis will be discussed and applied to the world of leisure. It is surprising that leisure, which is usually seen as an escape from the rationalized world of work, has itself become rationalized.

George Ritzer prefers to look at these increasingly McDonaldized settings as ?Islands of the Living Dead?. What does it mean for leisure when leisure sites themselves are McDonaldized? Are sites for the living dead?
George Ritzer is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland. He is currently Chair of the American Sociological Association?s Section on History of Sociology, was most recently Chair of the Section-in-Formation on Global and Transnational Sociology, and has previously chaired the ASA sections on Theoretical Sociology and Organizations and Occupations. He was awarded the American Sociological Association?s Distinguished Contribution to Teaching Award. Among his other awards are an Honorary Doctorate from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia; UNESCO Chair in Social Theory, Russian Academy of Sciences. 21. Juni 2012.
