Success at the Franz von Zeiller Moot Court for Civil Law

The Salzburg team of the Franz von Zeiller Moot Court for Civil Law – with three law students Ana Bernsteiner, Chiara Krombach and Antonia Wittwer-Tschohl – achieved second place in the nationwide competition ex-aequo with a team from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (WU). First place went to another team from the WU.

As part of the competition, students had to tackle an (anonymised) case currently being handled by the Supreme Court. Students had to act as a team of lawyers against the team from the Johannes Kepler University Linz. Their task was to write a fictive appeal response to enforce the interests of their client – a bank – against an expert, who had provided an appraisal of a painting, which had been used in the bank’s acquisition of the painting. They had to discuss complex issues in tort law and back their own legal position. On 18 June, a hearing took place before the Supreme Moot Court in Vienna. The team was able to hold its own both throughout its plea and during tough questioning from the panel of judges (President Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Lovrek, Attorney Dr. Christine Kolbitsch and Professor Dr. Chris Thomale, LL.M.). Janine De Monte and Eva Klampferer, with the additional support of Matthias Gröderer during the winter semester, as well as Stefan Guggenberger from EAG Rechtsanwälte GmbH supervised the team from the beginning of the preliminary round in the winter semester until the final in June.

Congratulations to the students and thank you to all those who supported the team!
