Abstract:
In this study we could show that Plantago lanceolata (English plantain) represents an underestimated allergen source triggering pollinosis. Nine novel allergens were identified by mass spectrometry and a lack of IgE cross-reactivity with pollen of other weeds, grasses and tree mediated by Ole e 1-like proteins was demonstrated. Based on these findings and contrary to the common clinical practice, we propose that Plantago should be considered as independent allergy sensitizer and thus be included in routine allergy diagnosis and immunotherapy.
