Great success for the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg: The university has been ranked in the annual “Times Higher Education Ranking” for the first time, and receives a place in the 601-800 level of the top 1000 universities.  

Every year, 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions are ranked by Times Higher Education. Paris Lodron University Salzburg was able to enter the ranking despite not making the list in the previous year.

The ranking is based on 13 indicators from the areas of business, research, teaching, citations, internationalisation, as well as the acquisition of third-party funding. This year, the analysis of 121 million citations and surveys from around 40,000 scientists* worldwide were included in the ranking.  

“I am very pleased that the University of Salzburg has made it into the annual Times Higher Education league tables with an excellent ranking,” emphasises Rector Hendrik Lehnert.

First place in the Times ranking goes to the University of Oxford (Great Britain) for the seventh time in a row. Harvard University (USA) follows in second place, with University of Cambridge (UK) and Stanford University (USA) tied in third place. The ETH Zurich (Switzerland) has secured the top continental European and German-speaking university with eleventh place. The TU Munich takes 30th place, making it the best German university.

This year, in addition to the PLUS, other Austrian universities also made it onto the list. Along with the University of Vienna (rank 124), the Medical University of Graz (rank 168) or the Medical University of Vienna also made the ranking. Austria is thus one step closer to reaching it’s research strategy goal: to have two Austrian universities in the top 100 by 2030. The University of Graz and Graz University of Technology, for example, remain in the 601-800 range.
