New Lecture: Introduction into Environmental and Climate History I: On the Way to the Anthropocene

This introductory lecture, intended for students with and without a background in history, will give a broad overview over key issues and concepts of environmental and climate history. It will place current debates about climate change and energy transition within the broader scope of the long-term development of human-nature interaction. To this end, the lecture will present the most influential interpretations as well as methodological approaches which have shaped the historical perspective on environmental change. The first part of this two-semester lecture will start out from the concept of the “Anthropocene”. The term “Anthropocene” has been coined by geologists to indicate that our planet, its climate, its biological diversity, and its geological stratification are increasingly, and irreversibly affected by human activity. From a historical perspective, the concept of the “Anthropocene” raises new questions about those social, cultural and economic processes which have contributed to the profound planetary transformations.
