On Fol’s traces to the Plankton Wonders
The 95 m deep Bay of Villefranche-sur-mer at the Cote d’Azur (France) is well known for its highly diverse plankton community. The Swiss university professor Hermann Fol (1854-1892) was the first who described several species of the fascinating tintinnid ciliates (house-forming protists) from this site. The species-rich tintinnid community of the Bay of Villfranche-sur-mer prompted a sampling trip within a FWF-funded project to the Observatoire Océanologique de Villefranche.
