New Book: What is a good childhood?

The book What is a Good Childhood? by Johannes Drerup and Gottfried Schweiger has been published in German by Reclam Verlag and in English by Palgrave Macmillan. It explores the question of what constitutes a good childhood from various perspectives and examines both historical and moral aspects of childhood. Key themes include the importance of material resources, interpersonal relationships, and education for children’s development. The authors place particular emphasis on the role of autonomy as an overarching value in the context of familial and public education.

Translations into Turkish and Chinese are planned for the coming year.

Johannes Drerup, born in 1981, is a Professor of General Education at TU Dortmund University and a Visiting Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on the philosophy of education and childhood, as well as the theory and practice of moral and democratic education.

Gottfried Schweiger is a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Ethics and Poverty Research at the University of Salzburg. His research interests include political philosophy, with a focus on poverty, social and global justice, migration, and childhood and youth.
