What makes a diplomat? Is diplomacy glamorous and dramatic?

Using his typically British humour, former ambassador Leigh Turner welcomes readers to the real world of diplomacy in his new book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Diplomacy – Wie Diplomatie die Welt erklärt” ( Czernin Verlag, April 2023). Leigh Turner served as Queen Elizabeth II’s diplomatic representative in Vienna, Moscow, Berlin, Kiev and Istanbul.

With bags of humour, sharp wit and insight, Turner recalls stories in German and English, which range from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, to espionage and its use in diplomacy, to diplomatic immunity and to the major political events of the 20th and 21st centuries – as well as how they can be groundbreaking for decisions in our own lives. Turner also writes about (un)diplomatic characters, politics and war whilst providing tips for diplomats, ambassadors and life in general.
