Dr Jane Goodall, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, UN Messenger of Peace and Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, is a world-renowned ethologist and activist who promotes greater understanding and action on behalf of nature. On 24 October 2024, Dr Goodall was a guest at the Great Hall of the Paris Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS). 

Dr Goodall is renowned for her pioneering studies of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania, which forever changed our understanding of our relationship with the rest of the animal kingdom. This groundbreaking research continues today as the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in the world. Their work is based on scientific innovation and the holistic approach that animal welfare can only succeed if the needs of people, animals and nature are taken into account. 

Lecture for young people at PLUS

Jane Goodall is a global icon who inspires hope and translates it into meaningful positive impact to create a better world for people, animals and the planet we share. One of the causes close to her heart is her Roots & Shoots programme, dedicated to empowering young people. 

On the morning of 24 October 2024, she spoke to a young audience in the main auditorium of the PLUS about her vision, her story and her motivation to work for the preservation of species and the protection of our planet. Schools from all over Austria and representatives of voluntary organisations, such as the youth fire brigade, presented their Roots&Shoots projects, which focus on the protection of the environment, nature and biodiversity in a variety of ways. 

Meet & Greet with Jane Goodall

On a small scale, staff and students of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg were able to meet Dr Jane Goodall in the library auditorium and be taken on a touching journey through the life of this unique personality. From biographical, very personal statements about her rocky path in her scientific career to her favourite projects. 

A “magic moment” for those present, as Rector Bernhard Fügenschuh noted in his words of thanks. It was an honour and a privilege for the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg to welcome Jane Goodall to Salzburg.
