After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the railroad remained one of the important transportation arteries of the newly independent countries. Despite economic and financial difficulties, many of these countries invested in modernization of existed lines and construction of new ones. Railroads in many countries remain one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy.
