Gastvortrag von Univ.-Prof. Dr. David Parker, University of Birmingham (UK)

„Editing Texts for the Future:
Computers and Manuscripts of the New Testament“

Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät, Salzburg, Universitätsplatz 1, HS 107
17.15 Uhr

An international team of scholars is making a series of editions of the Gospel of John. They are using computers to generate print and electronic editions in Greek, Coptic, Latin and Syriac. These editions are based on fresh studies of the ancient manuscripts which are our main source of information about the text of John. The teams are based in Birmingham UK, Salzburg, Münster i.W., and other places in Europe and North America.
The presentation will describe the project, including technical innovations, and discuss its relevance for theological research.
David Parker is Professor of New Testament Textual Criticism and Palaeography of the University of Birmingham, and he is Director of the Centre for the Editing of Texts in Religion. His recent publications are „The Living Texts of the Gospels“, Cambridge 1997; „An Edition of Calvin´s Commentary on Romans“, Geneva 1999; „A Comparison Between the Text und Textwert and the Claremont Profile Method Analyses of Manuscripts in the Gospel of Luke“, New Testament Studies 49 (2003), 108-138.
Prof. Parker is currently working on a critical edition of St John´s Gospel for the International Greek New Testament Project (IGNTP) and as Executive Editor responsible for the co-ordination and over-all editorial control of the project. For the University of Salzburg and the Department of Biblical Studies and Ecclesiastical History the Director of the Institute for Coptic Studies (Forschungsabteilung für Koptologie und Ägyptenkunde), Prof. Dr. K. Schüssler is the responsible scholar and co-ordinator of this partnership and research programme.
