ÖMG-DMV Congress 2017 at the Department of Mathematics

As part of the 19th Congress of the Austrian Mathematical Society and the Annual Meeting of the German Mathematical Society (ÖMG-DMV Congress), around 450 mathematicians from 34 countries are meeting this week at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Salzburg. This is the largest general mathematics event in the German-speaking world. The Statistics Days, which are organized in cooperation with the Austrian Statistical Society, are taking place at the same time.

Rector Heinrich Schmidinger, ÖMG President Michael Oberguggenberger, DMV President Michael Röckner and local conference chair Clemens Fuchs welcomed the research community to the opening ceremony. The DMV Honorary Membership was awarded to ERC President Jean-Pierre Bourguignon and the Cantor Medal to Gerd Faltings.

The guests were invited to a reception at the Salzburg Residence, which was hosted by the city and state. “There is mathematics in everything, in technology, in many other sciences. There is even mathematics in music,” emphasized Christian Stöckl, Deputy Governor, in his welcoming speech.

A highlight of the conference are the 9 keynote lectures given by world-leading researchers from various fields of mathematics. Among the most prominent of these are the first Austrian Fields Medal winner Martin Hairer (Warwick) and Lawrence Craig Evans (UC Berkeley), currently one of the world’s most important and influential analysts.

Other excellent keynote speakers include Aleksey Kostenko (University of Vienna) and Michael Eichmair (University of Vienna), the winners of the 2016 and 2017 ÖMG funding awards, Gabriele Nebe (RWTH Aachen), Gigliola Staffilani (MIT), Michael Zieve (Michigan), Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb (Cambridge) and Ursula Hamenstädt (Bonn), who gave this year’s Emmy Noether Lecture.

On Thursday evening, Walter Schachermayer (University of Vienna) will discuss the question “How probable is chance?” in a generally understandable way as part of the Public Lecture. The extensive lecture program consists of a total of around 250 lectures, which will be held in 25 sections and minisymposia and cover all areas of mathematics.

The numerous side events running in parallel include the University Day, the Teachers’ Day, the Student Conference, the 6th Austrian Stochastics Days and two special sessions on the topics of bibliometrics and industrial mathematics. During this week, the “Women in Mathematics” exhibition and various book exhibitions by scientific publishers will also be on display on the ground floor of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. On Wednesday afternoon, guests will alternatively be offered a guided tour of the old town or one of the attractive excursion destinations in the surrounding area. The day will end with a conference dinner in the Stieglkeller with traditional Austrian cuisine. This is the fourth time that the ÖMG-DMV Congress has been held in Salzburg. The consistently enthusiastic feedback from the guests suggests that the success of the previous congresses in 1952, 1977 and 1997 could be continued and that the Department of Mathematics could further expand its national and international visibility in this context. This shows once again that the Department of Mathematics is now one of the areas of excellence at PLUS, as Rector Heinrich Schmidinger emphasized in his opening speech.
