Marie Andeßner Prize, June 2024
for Miriam Schönauer
Miriam Schönauer, BSc MSc from the Department of Mathematics received the Marie Andeßner Prize for her outstanding Master’s thesis ‘An Adaptive Finite Element Method for Elastoplasticity with the Application of the Axioms of Adaptivity’ at a ceremony in the PLUS library auditorium on 27 June 2024. She dealt with the mathematical modelling of elastoplastic materials such as steel. Miriam Schönauer was able to extend the proof of optimal convergence from a paper by her supervisor and apply the concepts from the paper ‘Axioms of Adaptivity’ to the modelling problem for the first time. She had to find two independent (mathematical) proofs to verify the remaining axioms and she did it! The laudatory speech was held by Prof. Dr Uta Degner, pictured here with the prizewinner and her supervisor Prof. Dr Andreas Schröder, Head of the Department of Mathematics. The Marie Andeßner Prizes and Scholarships have been awarded to women in science since 2004 and are a contribution by the PLUS against the leaky pipeline and in favour of equality on the career path.

Christian Doppler Award
for Naian Liao
On 7 December 2023, Naian Liao, Ph.D. received the award presented by the State of Salzburg, named after the famous Salzburg physicist Christian Doppler, in the category ‘Application of the Doppler Principle, Technical Sciences, Mathematics and Physics’. Naian Liao was honoured for his scientific research in the field of regularity for Stefan problems. A typical example from this field of research is the phase transition of a material and, in connection with this, the equations that describe the diffusion of heat in the individual phases and the energy exchange in the intermediate state. Another motivation for his research comes from petroleum geology, which is concerned with the saturation of two immiscible liquids in a porous medium. Naian Liao is investigating the partial differential equations with which the physical laws of such natural phenomena are described. The aim is to provide mathematical evidence that the physical models are sufficiently complete descriptions within their theoretical framework. SUB AUSPICIIS FOR Ingrid Vukusic

Dr Ingrid Vukusic, BSc B.Ed.Univ. MSc MEd received her doctorate in natural sciences from the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (PLUS). Her dissertation entitled ‘Effective resolution of Diophantine problems related to S-unit equations’ falls into the field of number theory. The thesis consists of seven publications, all of which have already been published in international journals. The supervisor of the dissertation, Assoc. Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr Volker Ziegler, emphasised in his review that the work in the dissertation was written very carefully and the proofs were presented clearly and comprehensibly. The author has shown that she is proficient in various methods of number theory and is able to utilise them profitably. In view of the scope, the large number of different problems and the clear and concise style of writing, all the requirements of an excellent dissertation were met, said Ziegler. Born in Salzburg in 1995, Ingrid Vukusic attended the BORG Nonntal and then studied mathematics at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg. In the summer semester of 2020, she began her doctoral studies in natural sciences in the subject of mathematics and completed this successfully, as well as her entire school and academic education to date. Since the winter semester 2013/14, Vukusic has been studying for a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree in secondary school teaching, specialising in physical education and mathematics. Professor Clemens Fuchs, who gave the laudatory speech on behalf of supervisor Prof. Ziegler, emphasised that Dr Vukusic had struck him early on as a very talented young mathematician whose particular ambition was to understand everything precisely and to solve every exercise, no matter how difficult.

Paolo Di Stolfo graduated on 7 April 2022 under the auspices of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. Preference in all upper secondary school classes, Matura with distinction, a grade of ‘very good’ in all parts of the degree programme and top marks in the written scientific papers. These are the legal requirements for a doctorate under the auspices of the Federal President, including the award of a Ring of Honour of the Republic of Austria. Paolo Di Stolfo (born 1989) from Salzburg attended the private grammar school of the Sacred Heart Missionaries. He then decided to study at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg: he initially studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Computer Science and Mathematics and went on to complete a Master’s degree in both subjects. He finally completed his doctorate in mathematics. Numerous of his publications, which he published with his doctoral supervisor Professor Andreas Schröder (head of department and head of the Technical Mathematics working group), made it into renowned specialist journals. In his cumulative dissertation, Di Stolfo dealt with topics from the field of ‘Numerical methods for the approximate solution of partial differential equations (so-called finite element methods)’. Such methods are used for computer simulations for engineering problems (e.g. for the calculation of stress distributions in a structure); these are methods of high accuracy and extremely complicated calculation areas. Paolo Di Stolfo now works as a software developer at B&R Industrial Automation GmbH and as a computer science teacher at the Archbishop’s Private High School Borromäum.

SUB AUSPICIIS FOR GEORG ZIMMERMANN

Dr Georg Zimmermann, BA MSc studied mathematics and classical studies. He wrote his dissertation in mathematics on statistical methods for studies with small numbers of cases. ‘In his dissertation, Dr Zimmermann has developed very robust and widely applicable methods for covariance analysis that can also be used with a small number of study participants,’ emphasised laudator Prof. Dr Arne Bathke, supervisor of the dissertation. These can be used in particular in the treatment of rare diseases such as the so-called butterfly children (epidermolysis bullosa) or rare epilepsies. According to Bathke, various parts of this outstanding scientific work have each been published as separate articles in renowned international journals and have thus passed a further scientific quality test. Zimmermann, who has already received numerous awards and scholarships, is currently team leader at the Intelligent Data Analytics (IDA) Lab Salzburg at Paracelsus Medical University (PMU).
Kurt-Zopf-Förderpreis 2018 fOr Assoz. – Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Trutschnig
Kurt – Zopf – Förderpreis 2018
The Kurt Zopf Prize 2018 was awarded to plant ecologist Stefan Dötterl, sleep researcher Manuel Schabus and mathematician Wolfgang Trutschnig on 24 April 2019. The Salzburg scientists each receive 5,000 euros in prize money for outstanding publications. Important criteria for the award include the reputation of the publication medium as well as the novelty and scientific significance of the results. Wolfgang Trutschnig is a mathematical statistician who works primarily in the field of dependency modelling, i.e. the analysis of correlations between so-called random variables, and in particular attempts to quantify the influence of variables on other variables. The methods developed have applications far beyond statistics, and he is currently working very closely with ecologist Robert Junker, who won the Austrian START Prize in 2018.
Kirkman Medal for
Dr. Alexander Bors
Dr. Alexander Bors has made outstanding contributions to the understanding of combinatorial and quantitative problems on finite groups. He addresses fundamental theoretical questions, some of which are motivated by practical applications. He seeks characterizations that support efficient algorithmic decidability. His PhD work has earned him several awards, namely an “Award of Excellence – Austrian state prize for the best dissertations 2016”, the “Hans Stegbuchner Prize 2016” for outstanding mathematical theses at the University of Salzburg, and the “Studienpreis” of the Austrian Mathematical Society for the best PhD thesis in mathematics completed in Austria during the year. Dr. Bors has already published eight substantial articles, all but one single-authored. His nominators regard him as one of the best young mathematicians of his generation in the area of combinatorics and dynamical systems on finite groups.

Nicole Vorderobermeier
Psychologist Ann-Kathrin Joechner and mathematician Nicole Vorderobermeier were awarded the Marie Andessner Prize on Thursday, 21 March 2019 for their outstanding Master’s theses in the natural sciences. Statistics show that the proportion of women at universities is still declining at the upper levels of the hierarchy and that the representation of women in university management positions is extremely low. The University of Salzburg is trying to improve this situation through special support programmes. The Marie Andeßner Scholarships and Prizes make a particularly important contribution to this. These have been awarded since 2004.

Under the auspices of Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, Christof Kauba from Salzburg and Markus Hittmeir from Vöcklabruck (Upper Austria) received their doctorates on Tuesday, 29 January 2019. Dr. Markus Hittmeir completed his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies in mathematics at the University of Salzburg, where he initially worked as a student assistant and later as a doctoral student. Hittmeir wrote his outstanding dissertation on the factorisation problem, for which he was awarded the 2018 Dissertation Prize of the University of Salzburg last December. His supervisor, university lecturer Peter Hellekalek, emphasised that Hittmeir had succeeded in taking a significant new step with his work, which also has important practical significance for information security.

für Mathematik-Masterarbeit
Robert Knapp from Gastein has been awarded the 2018 prize for mathematical statistics by the Austrian Statistical Society for his master’s thesis in mathematics. ‘In his thesis, he dealt with aspects of multiple testing,’ explains the supervisor of the Master’s thesis, University Professor Arne Bathke. The test procedure can be used to answer various questions, such as determining the best therapy procedure. In addition to maths and physics, Robert Knapp also studied Latin to become a teacher.
Dissertationspreis 2018 an Dr. rer. nat. Markus Hittmeir
Überragende Arbeit
This year’s dissertation prize went to mathematician Dr. Markus Hittmeir for his outstanding work on the factorisation problem. Doctoral supervisor Doz. Dr. Peter Hellekalek emphasised that Hittmeir’s work could hold its own worldwide. ‘He has shown a great deal of daring,’ said Hellekalek, adding that he has made significant progress by combining different methods. The prize of 2,000 euros was donated by the members of the Research Forum Association at the University of Salzburg and the Rotary Club Salzburg-Nord. 25 excellent dissertations from all faculties of the university were submitted. Born in Vöcklabruck in 1991, Markus Hittmeir completed his Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Salzburg.
Young Investigator Awards verliehen

Am „Tag der Universität“ wurden begabte JungforscherInnen für ihre Projekte in unterschiedlichsten Forschungsbereichen ausgezeichnet. 18 ForscherInnen aus den Themengruppen Arts & Humanities, Law & Economics sowie Natural & Life Sciences hatten sich im Vorfeld des „Tages der Universität“ um den Young Investigator Award beworben. Platz 1 im Bereich Nature & Life Sciences ging an Georg Zimmermann. Er hatte seine Forschungsarbeit der Datenanalyse von seltenen Krankheiten gewidmet, vor allem der Frage, ob es weiterer Verfeinerungen in der Forschung bedarf.
Hlawka-Preis 2018
für Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Volker Ziegler
Der Edmund und Rosa Hlawka-Preis für Mathematik wird an Mathematiker/innen mit österreichischer Staatsbürgerschaft vergeben, Alter bis 45 Jahre, für hervorragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen auf den Gebieten der Zahlentheorie und der Geometrie, insbesondere der Theorie der Gleichverteilung und der Geometrie der Zahlen. Die Vergabe erfolgt nur in geraden Jahren. Die Nominierung erfolgt über Wissenschaftler/innen, die als Professor/inn/en im Fachbereich Mathematik an einer Universität oder an einer außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtung in Österreich tätig sind. Über die Zuerkennung des Preises entscheidet die mathematisch-naturwissenschaftliche Klasse der ÖAW auf Vorschlag einer Vergabekommission nach einem internationalen peer-review-Verfahren. Das Preisgeld beträgt 4.000,- Euro. In diesem Jahr wurde der Rosa Hlawka-Preis an Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Volker Ziegler, Assistenzprofessor in der Arbeitsgruppe Diskrete Mathematik am Fachbereich Mathematik verliehen.
VERLIEHENE AUSZEICHNUNGEN AM 31. Mai 2017 – TAG DER UNIVERSITÄT
Sub auspiciis: Dr. Alexander Bors
Alexander Bors wurde am Mittwoch, den 31. Mai 2017, im Rahmen des Tags der Universität, zum Doktor rer. nat. "sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae" promoviert und erhielt von Bundespräsident Alexander Van der Bellen den damit verbundenen Ehrenring. Dr. Alexander Bors verfasste seine Dissertation mit dem Titel "On algebraic aspects of finite dynamical systems" unter der Betreuung und im Rahmen des von Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Peter Hellekalek geleiteten SFB-Teilprojektes "Arithmetic Primitives of U.D. mod 1" des FWF am Fachbereich Mathematik der Universität Salzburg. Herr Bors wird ab Herbst 2017 im Rahmen eines Schrödingerstipendiums des FWF an der Universität Perth in Australien forschen.
Preis für hervorragende Lehre am Tag der Universität
für Ass.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Trutschnig
Im Rahmen des Tages der Universität wurde Ass.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Trutschnig der 3. Preis für hervorragende Lehre überreicht. Die Jurymitglieder hatten dieses Mal die schwieriege Aufgabe, unter insgesamt 25 Einreichungen eine Auswahl zu treffen. Begründung der Jury: Die Vorlesung "Fraktale und Zufall" von Wolfgang Trutschnig wird von der Jury als beste Vorlesung unter den Einreichungen ausgewählt und von den Studierenden als "beste Lehrveranstaltung im Wahlfachangebot" bezeichnet. Die Relevanz der Inhalte wird den Studierenden von Anfang an deutlich gemacht, ebenso wie die Verbindung zu anderen mathematischen Bereichen herausgestellt wird. Mit einem unbekannten Phänomen in die Vorlesung einzusteigen und sich davon ausgehend den Vorlesungsstoff zu erarbeiten, wird von der Jury besonders hervorgehoben. Die gemeinsam erarbeiteten Schritte werden dabei als To-Do-Liste für das Semester verfasst und somit wird der Vorlesungsplan unter Einbeziehung der Studierenden festgelegt. Gleichzeitig bietet diese Struktur das ganze Semester über eine gute Orientierung. Hervorzuheben ist ebenfalls, dass es sich nicht um reinen Frontalvortrag handelt, sondern die Studierenden die Möglichkeit haben, selbst Berechnungen durchzuführen und verschiedene Wege ausprobieren können. Willkommen sind alternative Beweisideen, die spontan und gemeinsam diskutiert und überprüft werden, und so kommen die Studierenden zu unerwarteten Zusammenhängen von Teilgebieten der Mathematik. Insgesamt wird die Vorlesung als didaktisch sehr gelungene Lehrveranstaltung mit einem sehr gut durchdachten Konzept prämiert.
Preis "Young Investigators Award"
Dipl.-Math. Andreas Byfut
Dipl.-Math. Andreas Byfut präsentierte in seinem Vortrag mit dem Titel "Simulation of thermoelastic deformations in NC-milling operations" wesentliche methodisch Aspekte seiner Dissertation und gewann damit den 3. Platz im Bereich "Natural & Life Sciences" des Young Investigator Award 2017 der Universität Salzburg. Die Dissertation von Herrn Byfut entsteht im Rahmen des am Fachbereich Mathematik angesiedelten DFG-Schwerpunktprojekts "Simulation thermomechanisch bedingter Bauteildeformationen für die NC-Fräsbearbeitung" (SPP1480) unter der Betreuung von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Schröder (Leiter der Arbeitsgruppe Technische Mathematik).
Staatspreis Award of Excellence
an Alexander Bors
Herr Alexander Bors vom Fachbereich Mathematik der Universität Salzburg erhielt am Mittwoch, den 7.12.2016 in Wien für seine Dissertation "On dynamical aspects of finite group endomorphisms " den Award of Excellence – Staatspreis für die besten Dissertationen 2016 vom Bundesminister für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wissenschaft. Der Preis wurde ihm im Rahmen einer Feier im Palais Harrach von Frau Sektionschefin Dr. Iris Rauskala überreicht. Herr Bors hat seine Dissertation im Rahmen des Spezialforschungsbereichs "Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods" des Fonds zur Förderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF) unter der Betreuung von Peter Hellekalek an der Universität Salzburg geschrieben. Seine Resultate finden international Beachtung und haben ihm bereits mehrere Einladungen, wie z.B. nach Kanada und Australien, beschert. Ein weiterer Award of Excellence ging ebenfalls an die Universität Salzburg, an Frau Mag.iur. Dr.iur. Vanessa McAllister, LLB.oec. Ihre Dissertation am Fachbereich für Strafrecht und Strafverfahrensrecht wurde von O.Univ.Prof. Dr. Kurt Schmoller betreut.
Prize for Achievement in Information-Based Complexity 2015
Peter Kritzer, Privatdozent am Institut für Finanzmathematik und angewandte Zahlentheorie der Universität Linz und Lehrbeauftragter an unserem Fachbereich hat den
prestigeträchtigen “Prize for Achievement in Information-Based Complexity 2015” erhalten.
Dr. Kritzer ist bereits Träger zahlreicher nationaler Auszeichnungen, wie dem Hans-Stegbuchner-Preis, dem Christian-Doppler-Preis und dem Kardinal-Innitzer-Förderungspreis.
Er absolvierte sein Studium der Mathematik an der Universität Salzburg und promovierte hier 2005 Sub Auspiciis Praesidentis Rei Publicae. Dr. Kritzer ist dem Fachbereich Mathematik unserer Universität bis heute als Lehrbeauftragter sowie im Rahmen von wissenschaftlichen Kooperationen, aktuell in einem Spezialforschungsbereich des FWF
QMC: Quasi-Monte Carlo Methods verbunden.
Mathematik Absolventin ausgezeichnet
Hans-Stegbuchner-Preis
Helene Anna Laimer, BSc MSc, wurde für außergewöhnliche Studienleistungen der Hans-Stegbuchner Preis verliehen. Ausgezeichnet wurde sie für ihre Masterarbeit "Lower Estimates for Lebesgue Functions". Das Thema der Arbeit behandelt eine schwierige Fragestellung innerhalb der Interpolations- und Approximationstheorie, welche in der Originalliteratur zum Teil fehler- haft und unvollständig dargestellt ist. Gelobt wurde von der Jury der Universität Salzburg, dass Frau Laimer die Mängel der Originalliteratur korrekt aufgearbeitet hat und Beweise in eigenständiger Form geliefert hat. Der 1998 verstorbene, am Fachbereich Mathematik von 1980 bis 1998 als Universitäts- dozent tätige Dr. Hans Stegbuchner ist Initiator des Preises. Der nunmehr von Raiffeisen Salzburg gesponserte und mit 500 Euro dotierte Preis wird für herausragende Diplom- und Masterarbeiten sowie Dissertationen der Mathematik einmal jährlich verliehen.
Versicherungspreise für Masterarbeit
GVFW Preisverleihung
Herrn Benjamin Reichenwallner wurden im November für seine Masterarbeit mit dem Titel "Modellwahlverfahren für Proxy-Modelle im Kontext von Solvency II" der "Insurance Award Brain" sowie der Förderpreis der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Versicherungsfach- wissen (GVFW) verliehen. Beide Preise sollen das Interesse von Studierenden aller Studienrichtungen an der Behandlung versicherungsrelevanter Themen in Abschlussarbeiten fördern. Herr Reichenwallner hat in Salzburg das Masterstudium Mathematik sowie das Lehramts- studium für Mathematik und Geschichte absolviert und befindet sich derzeit im Doktorrats- studium Mathematik. Die Masterarbeit wurde von Christian Buchta betreut. Während das Institut für Versicherungswirtschaft an der Johannes-Kepler-Universität Linz zum zweiten Mal den Diplomarbeits-, Masterarbeits- und Dissertationspreis "Insurance Award Brain" vergeben hat, wurde der Förderpreis der GVFW bereits zum vierten Mal und heuer an vier Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten verliehen. Ein besonderes Anliegen ist der GVFW die aktuelle Relevanz der prämierten Arbeiten für das Versicherungswesen. Die weiteren Preisträgerinnen bzw. Preisträger sind Julia Braun (BOKU Wien), Taisiia Makarova (WU Wien) sowie Philipp Fidler (Uni Wien).
Gerhard-Bruckmann-Preis
an Herrn Wolfgang Voit
Der Gerhard-Bruckmann-Preis der Österreichischen Statistischen Gesellschaft wurde am 18. Juni an Herrn Wolfgang Voit für seine Diplomarbeit an der Universität Salzburg mit dem folgenden Titel verliehen: „Stochastik im Mathematikunterricht. Theoretische Überlegungen und empirische Untersuchungen über den Status der Statistik und Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung im Mathematikunterricht an Salzburgs höheren Schulen.“ Der Gerhard-Bruckmann-Preis zeichnet jährlich (höchstens) eine Abschlussarbeit aus, die dazu beiträgt, den Stellenwert der Statistik in der Öffentlichkeit zu verbessern bzw. sich mit Didaktik der Statistik beschäftigt. Wolfgang Voit hat in Salzburg Mathematik und Informatik auf Lehramt studiert. Seine Diplomarbeit wurde von Arne Bathke betreut. Bei der Preisverleihung am 18. Juni wurde weiterhin jeweils ein Preis in den Kategorien „Mathematische Statistik“ und „Angewandte Statistik“ verliehen. Preisträgerinnen waren Alexandra Posekany (TU Wien) und Nina Senitschnig (Uni Wien).
Ehrenmitgliedschaft ÖMG
Harald Niederreiter wurde am 10.1.2013 für seine Verdienste um die mathematische Wissenschaft die Ehrenmitgliedschaft der Österreichischen Mathematischen Gesellschaft (ÖMG) verliehen. Der Fachbereich gratuliert herzlich zu dieser Auszeichnung.
Edmund und Rosa Hlawka – Preis 2012
Professor Clemens Fuchs erhält den Edmund und Rosa Hlawka – Preis 2012 der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Der Fachbereich Mathematik gratuliert herzlich zum großen Erfolg.
Der Fachbereich Mathematik gratuliert seinem langjährigen Lehrbeauftragten Dr. Günter Maresch zum Gewinn des weltweiten Wettbewerbs “2012 Bentley Educator of the Year”. Der Preis wird am 14.11.2012 verliehen.
