Insular tropical ecosystems are extremely usage-sensitive and serve as a habitat for specific flora and fauna; thus, they require special protection. Among the most threatened ecosystems in this context are orobioms with a gradation of vegetation in correlation with altitude. This field trip focuses on the development of nature and landscape and the corresponding aspects within regional development: Analysis of Landscape Potentials, Determination of Conflicts within Landscape and Land Use Development, Investigation of Development Perspectives (Scenarios). These key aspects are pointed out in example areas such as National Parks and Cultural Landscapes.

Ruhr Metropolitan Area

The field trip features the cities of  Dortmund, Bochum, Duisburg and Essen, a Green European Capital. Next to structural changes and urban-industrial city development, urban ecological topics will be discussed. The renaturation of the Emscher river, decentralized rainwater management, urban biodiversity as well as planning and usage concepts for former industrial areas in the Emscher Landscape Park are among the key aspects of the field trip.

Southern France (Provence)

The field trip features a visit to the National Park Camargue and to the Nature Parks Alpilles and Luberon as well as to other parts of the Provence. The participants deal with Regional Development, Nature Protection, Sustainable Tourism, and Management of Agriculture. In general, students will familiarzie with the natural properties and culture of mediterranean landscapes in southern France

Tenerife

Für certain segments of landscape the following tasks will be carried out: Analysis of Landscape Potentials, Determination of Conflicts within Landscape and Land Use Development, Investigation of Development Perspectives (Scenarios). The focal point of these task is the development of nature and landscape and the corresponding aspects within regional development.

Hungary and Slowakia

The field trip is concerned with projects concerning management of nature (Lake Neusiedl, Danube dams in Bratislava, National Park High Tatra/Slowakia and with the management of nature and landscape in cities (Sporon, Bratislava, Budapest and Banská Štiavnica). Furthermore, questions on landscape analysis and landscape management will be addressed and examplified. In the course of the trip, facilities where landscape management is put into practice will be visited.
