Welcome to the Department of English & American Studies!

Whatever your degree interests, with us you’re sure to find exciting, challenging and flexible course options: from sociolinguistics to British, American, colonial and postcolonial Anglophone literatures and cultures; from second language acquisition and psycholinguistics to poetry, discourse/multimodal linguistics and multi-media research, film, feminist and queer studies; from opportunities for independent study to project internships and English language teaching. In research and teaching, we balance inventive and traditional methodologies, new and old media, close reading and big data, small seminars and large digital conferences.

Our faculty and graduate students enjoy national and international reputations in these areas, and we boast many prestigious fellowships, third party funding and research/teaching awards. Graduates of our B.A. and M.A. programs find successful careers in the civil service, teaching, technical and literary translation, academic publishing/editing, text and information design, linguistic and cultural mediation/consulting for the media, advertising, public relations, commerce, tourism, cultural institutes and NGOs, as well as speech and language therapy. There are also various options for going on to advanced studies in English.
