10 reasons why studying in Salzburg is great
Mozart, festivals, high rents and the home of Stiegl beer – these are probably some of the most common things that come to mind about Salzburg. But Salzburg is not just a place for high society, but a dream city for students. So, without further ado, here are the 10 reasons why studying in Salzburg is great!
Choosing a city is like choosing a date. Some are drawn to the excitement of city life; others prefer it more laid back. But what about a combination of the two? Is that even possible? Could Salzburg be the answer? Okay, Salzburg can hardly be described as a vibrant metropolis – even at a stretch – but it is also anything but a boring dump.
Studying in Salzburg: bridging the gap between an idyllic city & a multifaceted youth culture
There are probably far more than just 10 reasons why studying in Salzburg is a wonderful idea, but we don’t want to seem boastful…
1.) Studying with excellent academic supervision at the University of Salzburg
The University of Salzburg is a relatively small university with around 18,000 students, which means that students can look forward to excellent academic support. Professors can dedicate time to the students, which guarantees a well-grounded, comprehensive education.
2.) Study in the beautiful old town or surrounded by nature
The University of Salzburg is not a campus university. This means that the university buildings are spread throughout the city. Depending on which subjects you choose, you can study either in the heart of Salzburg’s old town, in the newly built Unipark with its panoramic roof terrace in beautiful Nonntal or in the south of the city surrounded by fields and meadows. There is also another university site about 15 km away from Salzburg in Rif, where sports students can let off steam (blog post in German).
3.) Study surrounded by crystal-clear lakes you could drink from
What could be better in summer than taking a dip to cool off? It’s a good thing that there are plenty of lakes with top water quality near Salzburg. Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee, the Obertrumer lakes or even Mondsee in Upper Austria have such a high quality of water that you could drink from them. Insider tip: Be sure to visit the natural beach at Hof am Fuschlsee – turquoise water, a small sandy “beach” and a jetty stretching out into the lake await you.
4.) Study surrounded by the impressive mountain landscape
Climbing to the top of mountains and walking across flowering alpine meadows in summer, racing down the slopes over white glistening snow in winter: Mountains are always a real highlight. And psst! Salzburg is not just surrounded by mountains, it even has a few city mountains of its own. So if you’re not yet a mountain expert, try climbing the two smaller mountains: Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg (blog post in German). More advanced climbers can venture up the Gaisberg and pros should definitely not miss the Untersberg. Caution: Due to its proximity to the city, the Untersberg is often underestimated, but it is in fact a very tall mountain.
5.) Studying in Salzburg = studying in cycling heaven
Cycling past the bustle of traffic – that’s Salzburg! The cycle paths in and around Salzburg are very well maintained. Cycling means you’re not stood waiting for the bus or desperately trying to find a parking space, and most of the time the journey works out to be quicker. Your health will also thank you, because just 30 minutes of relaxed cycling burns around 150 calories.
6.) Study surrounded by young creatives
The Andräviertel in particular is home to many advertising agencies, cool little shops, cafés and boutique hotels. You might also meet bloggers here snapping new fashion photos for their blog. The blogger scene in Salzburg has grown considerably over the years. Food and fashion bloggers like tifmys show what life in Salzburg has to offer. You should also take a look at the online magazine Fräulein Flora – there you will find high-quality journalism in its purest form.
7.) Study in pub garden paradise
What could be better than winding down with a drink, sitting together with your classmates in a beer garden? In the fresh air, under rustling treetops makes it that bit better. The best-known beer gardens in Salzburg City are the Müllner Bräu and the Stieglkeller. The Weinstöckl Stadtheurige in Maxglan is smaller, but particularly charming, and you will also find a beautiful beer garden at the Weiserhof near the train station.
8.) Studying in Salzburg is accessible for all
Accessibility is a top priority at the University of Salzburg. That is why there is the disability & diversity office – here, individual and requirement-oriented advice and support is provided for students with disabilities and chronic illnesses.
9.) Study in a city with a real coffee house culture
Life is too short for bad coffee! Good news: In Salzburg you will hardly ever be served bad coffee, because coffee house culture is a big deal. Whether it’s a hip coffee shop like Kaffee Alchemie (right near Rudolfskai 42), the traditional Café Bazar or the alternative Café Heart of Joy: here every coffee lover gets his money’s worth. 10.) Study surrounded by employer powerhouses like Red Bull
Salzburg may not be a big city, but major companies such as Red Bull, Porsche, SPAR, dm, Palfinger and Lidl have still set up shop here. The ideal environment for exciting internships and also for starting a career after graduation.
